We had so much fun riding the shetland ponies at the Will's cowboy birthday party. My kiddos had so much fun riding the horses, especially Riley Kate--haha-is anyone suprised? She LOVES animals and those little ponies were so tiny and cute! Thank you to Mrs Sassy for sharing them with us and teaching us about their background. We had a blast at the birthday party, then headed off the Memphis for the day! It was a great day with lots of family fun!!

So sorry that it's been so long since my last blog! Life has been so wonderful, but just very busy!! Grayton and Riley Kate are doing wonderful, and Brantley is growing way tooooooo fast! Grayton had a checkup at St Jude, and everything looked wonderful!! He is such a good sport and handles the Von Willebrand so well! Riley Kate goes to the neurologist later this month for her follow up visit and MRI's. Both of them are playing ball this year for the first time! Grayton is playing coach pitch, and Riley Kate is in Tball. It's so crazy busy because Jason is coaching Grayton's team and I'm coaching Riley Kate's Tball team! We have either practice or a game almost every day! Sweet little Brantley definitely gets the "Best Baby" award!! He just goes with the flow--never fusses or is bothered by our crazy schedules!! With summer around the corner, the kids have had several programs both at church and at school. It is so wonderful to watch them and participate in all their activities, but we are ready for summer time and a much-needed break!!

Our little man is growing up way too fast!! He attended his first MSU basketball game with Jason & I, and keeping with our family tradition, his first game was MSU vs Ole Miss. He did so wonderful!! The Redneck Sled-haha! Funny, but perfect for children!! You don't have to worry about them falling out and it's super comfortable in that boat seat!! Kind of felt like a sleigh ride! My sweet daddy thought of this--he's the best! He'll do anything for his grandbabies!!

Winter Wonderland Fun!!

We had so much fun in the snow again! We went to the Burton's to ride the sled and get pulled behind the four-wheeler and rhino. Wow-it was soooooo much fun! Well, the adults might have been having more fun than the kiddos!! Then we took a break for lunch and headed to Grampy and Nette's for some more sledding on a "one of a kind" sled that Grampy rigged up-haha! Yes, it was a fishing boat that he tied to the four-wheeler and drug us around! Talk about fun though!! It really felt like a sleigh ride! Jason and I, once again, had just as much fun as the kids!!

Woohoo! Santa came! We were all so excited to wake up and see that Santa had been here! Wow-he brought some awesome stuff! He even brought us a little yorkie puppy! That was super exciting for everyone, especially Riley Kate! She had asked Santa Clause while she was in the hospital for a puppy. She loves animals, and she immediately started "mothering" the puppy. Riley Kate decided to name her Bella, and we all love Bella so much-she's really a playful little puppy.

Every year we attend Christmas Eve Mass with Jason's family, and it's always so wonderful! It really gets everyone in the Christmas spirit! After church, we go to Jason's parent's house for heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks, and we always have so much fun visiting with family and acting silly with Uncle Matthew!! We had so much fun this year because the kids were so excited about celebrating Jesus' birthday and Santa coming--it was soooooo wonderful!

Well, Riley Kate was doing much, much better, and her doctors at LeBonheur said it was fine for her to return to school. However, I kept her home with me, but I did take her to her class Christmas party. When she walked in the door, all of her classmates jumped up and ran to hug and love on her--it was the sweetest thing!! It brought tears to my eyes! They were all so sweet and told her how they had been praying for her to get better--so precious!! She was so excited and had so much fun!! Grayton had so much fun at his party too!! Thank you to all the mothers--you all did a great job!! :)

I have honestly been dreading this post a little bit because I have not been ready to relive all of these events and go through them in my head, but I feel that I owe to all of you to let you witness how powerful all of your prayers were for us!

On December 10th, Riley Kate had a wonderful Friday at school and at home, and she was her normal happy, playful self. That night she was spending the night with my parents, and she was so excited about it! My mom called about 10pm and said Riley Kate felt hot like she had fever, but she was alseep, so they would just watch her. We told them to take her fleece pj bottoms off b/c she gets so hot, especially when she sleeps. She called back about 12am and said that Riley Kate had vommitted, so I immediately rushed out there. When I got there, she was obviously sick but acting normal and responsive. She was talking and saying she didn't feel good, but she wasn't doing anything abnormal. It had been over 2 years since she had her last seizure, and we really thought she had outgrown the seizures. Well, we had hoped she had!

All of the sudden her whole look just changed, and she was staring off to the right side into space and would not look at me or respond when I talked to her. I got worried she was about to seize, so I sent my mother to get the seizure meds at my house. I stripped Riley Kate down and proceeded to try and cool her down with lukewarm rags but was unsuccessful. Then, it began; she started to seize violently. I grabbed her and ran to the car yelling for my dad to drive us to the hospital. She was jerking so badly that it was extremely hard for me to even hold her--this was the worst seizure by far that I had ever seen! She seized the whole way to the ER and continued to seize for about a total of 10-12 minutes, which seemed like forever!!

Once the seizure stopped, she was in what is called a postictal state, where she was totally unresponsive & having obvious difficulty breathing. Dr Wells came in, examined her, reviewed the labs (which included arterial blood gases), and became extremely concerned. She ordered a stat head CT, more labs, and the order I didn't want to hear--for her to be put on the ventilator. The carbon dioxide in her blood was 181 and the normal range is 35-45, so she was definitely having trouble getting air in and out of her lungs. The next thing I knew Dr Wells was telling me she would need to be air lifted to Lebonheur right away. My whole body went a little numb as I tried to wrap my mind around exactly what was going on. Everything just seemed to be happening so fast. I remember starting to cry b/c I knew if she was flown there, I wouldn't be able to ride with her and be right there with her holding her little hand. Those of you who know me, know I NEVER leave my kids when they're sick. I always tell doctors or nurses, "if you can't do the procedure, etc. without me in the room, then it won't be done," and I'm very stubborn about that!! Dr Wells knows me quite well, and I'm sure she knew what I was thinking! She grabbed me and promised me that Riley Kate was going to be fine, everything was going to be fine! I love her and trust her, and I knew she would do everything in her power to keep that promise!

The Pediflight team from LeBonheur made it almost halfway to Clarksdale and had to turn back due to bad weather and strong winds, so we would have to wait for them to come by ambulance. In the meantime, the CRNA from the anesthesia department intubated Riley Kate and hooked her up to the ventilator. Honestly, that was hard to watch. I just kept asking for everyone to be sure she stayed sedated, so she wouldn't wake up with a tube down her throat!! That would be horrifying, even for an adult! Her CT was done, and our dear friend that is a radiologist came to take a look at it at 3am. He was up front and honest with us and told me straight up that it was abnormal. He then told us there were several calcifications that were in a pattern that made him lean towards a diagnosis of Tuberous Sclerosis, which I had never heard of, but he said an MRI with and without contrast would be needed for further investigation of these tumor-like areas in her brain. As we wheeled back to the ER, the Pediflight team arrived in the ambulance to pick up Riley Kate.

I know I probably aggrevated them so much because I made each one promise me they would keep her sedated and not let her wake up with that tube in. They all were so sweet and reassured me they would not let that happen, and they even called and got an order to give extra sedatives to ensure she would stay sedated and have no memory of any of this.

The next thing I knew Jason, Brantley, and I were following an ambulance to LeBonheur. The weather was horrible, and the rain and wind made it difficult to drive, but Jason stayed right with the ambulance! For some reason, it made us feel better to at least be able to see the ambulance since we couldn't be on it with Riley Kate. We were suprisingly calm, and I know it was the prayers all of you were sending our way.

Grayton was alseep at my aunt's house, so he stayed there. My dad had left a few min before we did heading to LeBonheur. He is so close to all of my children but has a special connection with Riley Kate, or as he calls her "Sweetie Sweetie." She absolutely adores him, and they are like two peas in a pod!!

LeBonheur was ready for us! When we arrived, we were immediatley rushed upstairs straight to the ICU. The nurses and doctors already knew all about what was going on with Riley Kate, and before I knew it, our room was full of different specialists, each with their own ideas and plans about how to approach the situation. I answered all their questions and listened to them hash out what to do first. I was so amazed at how quickly they acted, and I, being a medical proffessional myself, was very impressed with all of them.

My poor baby had tubes and wires everywhere and was hooked up to what seemed like so many machines! It felt like a bad dream. I just remember holding her cold little hand and praying constantly and begging God to watch over my baby girl, still feeling calm and at peace with the whole situation. As a matter of fact, I had spoken to two of my friends on the way to Memphis, and they were amazed at how calm Jason and I were. Prayer is powerful, People, and your prayers were felt!

After several tests and what felt like days, a group of neurologists came in and confirmed the abnormal CT and the tumors in her brain. I spent the entire night and day just sitting by her bed, holding her little hand, praying to God, and talking and singing to her. After all, she is still my baby girl, even though she's 4 years old. :)

Soon after that, the diagnosis was confirmed to be Tuberous Sclerosis Complex due to the pattern of the tumors in her brain that showed up on the MRI. I immediately started thanking God because even though this was not great news, we now knew what this was, and we could start developing a game plan on how to address it. The next step was to wean her off the ventilator. She had been pretty heavily sedated for almost 24 hours, so the doctors said it might take a while to wean her off, but it didn't. As soon as they started decreasing the sedation meds, she started moving around and waking up, so they had to go ahead and remove the tube. She did so great!! As soon as they took it out, she looked right at me and said "Hey, Mommy," in a weak, little hoarse voice. It was the sweetest moment--I'll never forget it! Then she wanted her daddy, and she said she wanted a snack, so we knew she would be back to normal in no time!!

After several hours of observation, they finally sent us up to a regular room! Yay! We were so excited! I cannot even begin to thank everyone who visited us, brought food, called, sent texts, facebook messages, emails, and most importantly, prayed--you all touched a special place in my heart, and words cannot express my grattitude. I was so overwhelmed with all the love everyone poured out to us, and most of all, for all the prayers being sent up for Riley Kate. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking of so many people taking time out of their busy day just to pray for my baby girl--it's still so amazing to me! I truly believe in the power of prayer, but now I have experienced it in such a big way! Prayer is powerful, and it is the very reason why Riley Kate is doing so well today!

We spent a couple of days in LeBonheur having more tests run and being observed. Riley Kate had an EEG, renal ultrasound, echocardiogram, MRI, tons of labs, and was examined by so many different doctors, but she did so amazing!! All of those tests and examinations can be very scary and intimidating to a 4yr old, but Riley Kate followed every instruction given to her perfectly. She was such a great patient! I was so proud of her.

After we were discharged from ICU, we were invited to a Christmas party in the lobby with Santa Clause. Of course, we went, and it was so awesome for Riley Kate! For a minute, she forgot what all she had been through, that she was sick, and that she was in a hospital. For those few minutes at that Christmas party, she was just a little girl mesmerized by Santa and overcome with giddiness and excitement! I couldn't stop thanking the people who volunteered to arange the party. I know that we all have helped with functions similar to that before, but I really never knew just how much it meant to those involved.

Finally, they gave us the green light to go home-Yay! Riley Kate was so excited! She was sooooo ready to be at home with her whole family. We are so blessed that we got to go home and that Riley Kate has been doing so well! She is currently on seizure medication, and we are awaiting our appointment in February with the TSC specialist, Dr Wheeles at LeBonheur. We cannot thank everyone enough for all of the love and prayers, and we ask that you all continue to lift up Riley Kate in prayer. St Jude Half Marathon

It's that time of year again! One of my favorite times of the year--St Jude race time!! Each year since Grayton has been a patient there, I have run as a hero and raised money for St Jude. This year, the heroes raised over 2.8million dollars for St Jude--now that's amazing!!! I love St Jude so very much, not only for all they have done for us and my son, but for what they do every minute of every day for each of their patients!! It truly is an AWESOME place, and if you have never been there, I suggest you go visit and experience what St Jude is really all about--the children! They do such an amazing job putting the focus on the child and not the cancer or the disease. I salute each person that contributes to that amazing hospital, and I feel so blessed to have them right here, literally, in our back yard!! God bless St Jude and each employee, family, and patient there--you all ROCK!!!

We would have been in trouble with some of the Ole Miss fans if Riley Kate wasn't so darn stinkin' cute!

My husband and I love the Egg Bowl, and we go every year! This year, we decided to take the whole family to cheer on the Dogs!! It was super fun for each one of us! Grayton knows what's going on during the game, so he really enjoys it!! Riley Kate cheers no matter who scores, but she does say "Go State" and "Go Dogs" and she gets so excited!! Brantley slept through 90% of the game and would have probably slept through the whole game had I not been cheering so loudly, but he was no trouble at all!! They're already Lil' Bulldogs at heart!!! :)

Well, Riley Kate has really paid close attention to EVERYTHING I do with Baby Brantley. She now nurses her baby dolls, stuffed animals, and even snakes & lizards-it's too much! I just hope she doesn't teach her friends this, or I'll be getting some phone calls!

Mama's Back!!

I hit the door running, literally, as soon as I got the ok from my Dr!! I am so happy to be back in the running world again! I have a long way to go to get back in shape, but it is so nice to be active again! Brantley already loves the jogger! He didn't make a peep on our first run! Grayton asked me if I could please get a stroller, so all 3 of them could ride!! Oh my goodness, NO! Can you imagine that-haha! I'm sure you all know by reading my blog that I'm not one to sit still or lay around the house all day! I seriously cleaned house & did laundry the day I got home from the hospital, and have been going non-stop ever since! I think that my body is so relieved not to be sick & pregnant anymore! I got the ok from my sweet Dr to take a casual stroll around the block each day with Brantley, and of course, I did just that! He soaked up a little sun rays and I enjoyed the fresh air. The kids were super excited that we all strolled together! We barely made it around the block & back to the house, and it started raining! I guess that was God's way of keeping me from over doing it & going around the block twice-haha!

On each of my kids' birthdays, I make them a special birthday cake. They get to pick out what they want, right down to the flavors of the cake and icing. This year Grayton wanted a spiderman/batman/superman cake with the bottom and top layers to be butter pound cake with my homemade buttercream icing, and he wanted the middle layer to be chocolate--chocolate chip pound cake with cream cheese icing. Whew-well, I did it. He loved it so much and was so proud of it, and that makes me so happy! All the hard work was well worth it!!

With all the excitement with Brantley arriving, we decided to take a special weekend getaway to Memphis-just the 5 of us for Grayton's birthday! We did some fun acitivities for the kiddos, and everyone had a blast!!

We went to the Children's Museum, Splash Park, and ate at some great restaurants, which is always super fun for the us and the kids! Brantley was a super good sport and was happy no matter where we went the whole weekend!

Well, all I can say is that I am married to an amazing man, and my kiddos have Super Dad for sure!! Most of you know that Jason is not your typical man-he always helps me out around the house and with the children, but I had no idea he would be so amazing for all of us after Brantley arrived in our world!

Jason was so great before, during, and after the delivery! He just amazes me! The kids decided they wanted to stay with us in Jackson the whole time, and Jason and I thought it might ease the transition of adding a new little person to our family, so they stayed at the hospital with us. Sounds crazy, I know, but somehow it worked out perfectly!! The kids zonked out early Thursday night because we had been up so early that morning to check in for the delivery. For those of you who have not delivered at Baptist, it is pretty much like a nice hotel room, especially the bathroom, so that was wonderful for everyone. Friday morning the kids ate breakfast with me and hung out with Brantley for a little while! Jason took them to Chic-fil-a to eat lunch and play on the playground. After that he took them to the Museum of Natural Science. They had such a fabulous time!! Then they went for ice cream, and he even took them to Belk in Dogwwod Market just to let them ride the escalator-haha! I mean what a super dad! We all ate supper together and then went home the next morning! It was such a wonderful and memorable experience for everyone, especially Grayton and Riley Kate! I just love that man more and more every day, and my children are so very blessed to have them as their daddy!!

Sweet, sweet little sleeping angel!!

Well, our sweet little man has arrived! I cannot express the love and joy I feel to be able to hold him along with my other two little blessings! Even though he just came into our lives yesterday, we all feel like he's just always been here! We all love him so much!

All four of us spent the night in Jackson prior to the delivery since we were scheduled to check in at 5:30am! We had a fun afternoon in Jackson together! Everyone had a little trouble going to sleep due to all of the excitement, but we all popped right out of bed bright and early at 4:45am ready to go get Brantley out of mommy's tummy!

Once my IV was going, everything started out well! Upon admission, I was 1.5cm, but that quickly changed!! My labor was not bad at all! I got to 4cm in no time, and didn't even require any pain medication prior to the epidural! My epidural was soooooo wonderful! I couldn't feel anything! Not long after lunch, my doctor stopped in to check on me and discovered that I was 10cm and ready! She left the room while the nurse prepared for the delivery! Which, by the way, I had the sweetest little nurse--we loved her so much!!

Everyone had left the room to go eat, so it was just Jason, the nurse, and myself! Well, while she was gathering supplies, Brantley decided that he was ready to come NOW! I never did the first push! Poor Jason had to start running around the room gathering the supplies for the nurse to deliver Brantley! I was holding the baby's head and trying to help the nurse! Luckily, Dr. Travelstead had come back down the hallway and heard the commotion. She ran into the room with the delivery cart and barely got her gloves on to catch Brantley--she didn't have time to suit up!! AND boy, are we glad she showed up! His umbilical cord wrapped around his little neck at the last minute, so she cut it very quickly! Poor Jason didn't get to cut the cord-he was functioning as a delivery nurse at the time-haha!! Within 10 seconds the room was filled with people taking care of both of us! I was a little scared because he didn't start crying right away, but after a few seconds and a little oxygen he showed us that his lungs worked perfectly!!! Praise the Lord, everything ended up fine! I didn't even get to push though!! My doctor just laughed and said "Somehow, I knew you were going to do that!"

Anyway, it was quite a day, and I can't wait to tell Brantley the story of his birth one day! We have all fallen madly in love with him, and I feel so very blessed to have this precious little family!

Happy Birthday to Riley Kate!! Yay!! We had a swimming party at our house for Riley Kate and her little friends! She had a blast--this is the first year she has really known what's going on!! She is too funny! I just love her little personality!!

As some of you know, it is tradition in the Scarbrough house for me to make the kids their birthday cakes each year, and when they get old enough, each child gets to pick his/her own cake, and I make it! I started this tradition on Grayton's 1st birthday!! Riley Kate had a tough time picking out her cake this year!! Up until now, I've just always picked it! She was so excited that she wanted every cake in the book!! Finally, she picked a mermaid cake! Yes, it's a lot of work, but it's something special they will hopefully remember one day when they are grown!

Today my baby girl is 4 years old, and I'm filled with happiness and a little sadness!! I cannot believe it!! Goodness, how time flies!! I remember the very minute Riley Katherine Scarbrough entered this world--it was one of the most precious moments of my life! I remembered wondering how I would have enough love for 2 children, but the moment she was born, the wondering stopped and my love for her outpoured!! It's an amazing thing to experience! Grayton ran in the Delta Jubilee fun run! He told me he wanted to run "just like you mom!" Too cute!! He knows how much his mommy loves to run, and I think he enjoys it too!! I have so many precious memories of vacations on the beach with my family as a child and want my children to experience the same things I did. For Valentine's Day this year we went to the brunch at Tunica National, and it was so good! Everyone had fun, especially the kids! After the race and on our way to eat at Houston's--a St. Jude race tradition Jason and I started 3 years ago when I ran my first half marathon!

I finally did it!! I ran the St Jude Memphis Marathon! I love running and decided to challenge myself to run 26.2 miles. I trained for a couple of months and am so glad that I did it!! I feel like a real runner now! It was an amazing experience, and I would love to do another one in the future!!

We went to MSU Homecoming this weekend and tailgated even though the weather was not cooperating! We did have a wonderful time--as we always do in Starkville! The kids actually sat and watched the game-which made the trip much more enjoyable! We walked all over campus and around the Cotton District and took the kids to eat at The Grill! It is still delicious!! We had fun and cannot wait to come back for the Florida game!

Well, Riley Kate turned 3 and had about 3 birthday parties with family and we are still going to have 1 more for her friends--can we say Princess?? She is so funny-she really thinks her birthday is not just on July 14, but the whole month of July!! I love this little wild woman more than anything!! Summertime Fun

Double Decker Festival

Jason and I ran the Double Decker 10K, but almost missed it!! It's a 7:30 am start time which is relatively early compared to most other races, and to make it to Oxford with children prepared for a festival weekend, well let's just say it's a feat to pull off. We literally parked the car 2 minutes before start time!! But thanks to Aunt Ali, who had our packets waiting for us, we handed off the kids and sprinted to the starting line! That is cutting it a little too close for me!!Jason learned a valuable lesson too, just because your chip is "on your body" doesn't mean it will get scanned at the start and finish. He stashed his in his short's key pocket because of the rush we were in and ran the race, turns out, no "official" time was recorded. So, to all you race runners out there, take time to tie your chip to your shoe laces. We had a fun race but training in the Delta doesn't exactly prepare you for the Oxford hills.

Once again, our #1 fans are always there to cheer us on!! I do have to take a moment to dote on my son who ran his first ever race!! Grayton ran the 1 mile fun run and did very well!! He ran the whole race without stopping!! Uh-oh, before long he'll be outrunning us!!

Juke Joint 5K

Jason and I ran the Juke Joint 5K again this year and enjoyed it! It is always fun to run with my sweet hubby!!

I recruited a new runner this year, Julie! Well, I really just bugged the mess out of her to run the race with me, so she did! The farthest she has ever gone, and she did so awesome!! Also, fellow runners Lisa and Kitty ran too!!

Coach Mullen Comes to Town

Today, Mississippi State's new Head Football Coach Dan Mullen made a stop by of as part of his Road Dawg's Tour. Over a period of about 3 weeks, he and other athletic department, Alumni Association, and Bulldog Club representatives are making stops in 16 Southeastern cities from Dallas to Birmingham to meet, greet, and speak about the university and the upcoming football season. Today, our local alumni chapter hosted Coach and his entourage at the country club. We had a good ol' Delta catfish and hush puppy luncheon and heard some great words of motivation and encouragement, not only about the university and the football team but about everyday life. You can't help but get excited after hearing what Coach Mullen has to say. Grayton and I went, and I have to say for a four year old, he did very well, especially with his table manners. He's still not a catfish fan but more than made up for it with the french fries. The little old ladies that meet for lunch and bridge couldn't get enough of the little man. He did get a bit restless toward the end and stepped outside to watch the guys on the driving range but came back before it was all over to get this picture with Coach Mullen. I asked him if he wanted me to be in the picture with him but he wanted to stand next to Coach all by himself. It's pretty neat to think just a few months ago Mullen was tutoring Heisman winner Tim Tebow and winning the national championship. Thanks Coach Mullen and Go Dawgs!!! We missed Mommy as the clinic was full of patients, even at noon. (Usually, Rachel takes care of the blog posting, but I couldn't help myself today.)

The Easter Bunny came to see us Saturday morning!!

Riley Kate knew it was Hawk, but was scared when he had his bunny ears on! I was so tired I did not even care! I had run 12 miles that morning and my legs were feeling a little like jello!!

And Riley Kate had a meltdown--shocking, I know-haha!!
